some help from someone that knows code stuff? [Feb. 6th, 2008|12:14 am]
so i updated my website, and instead of putting the new stuff in the art section, i tried to put it on the main page. so i had to do some linking out to the lightbox file from the main index. everything seems to be working okay, except that neither the close label nor the loading animation appear. the strange thing is that the left and right arrows show up, and they're all in the same damn file/place/whatever.

does anyone know what to do about this? it's not that big of a deal, it's pretty annoying. that, and i spent most of the night trying to figure what the hell was wrong instead of doing the character designs i had planned.

anyone that can help me out with this would be very, very awesome.

regarless, there's lots of new stuff on the website.

uh... [Jan. 22nd, 2008|12:51 pm]
hopping vampires! to appear in the second BEASTS book by fantagraphics!

typical jonathan illustration - white girl kicking ass and saving cowardly asian boyfriend from supernatural creatures.

so i haven't updated my livejournal in like a million weeks. there are lots of explanations for that, the main one being that i've been busy working with greg means and mk reed on a project entitled americus. the first chapter will appear in greg's papercutter anthology that should be out in april or so. it been a pretty interesting/some times difficult/rewarding process working on someone else's script and collaborating with people besides jason and tyler. i think the thing that i'm getting out of it the most is maintaining a drawing schedule. it has made me a little crazy that i've surpassed where i was at with one of the johns, but i've tried not to think about it too much. i think that i'll get back to it when i'm good and ready to get back to it. even if americus takes a year or so, god knows that there have been years that i've done jack all, and at least this will keep me drawing and challenge me.

i also haven't had any interest in being on the internet lately. then i feel bad because i don't want to just post, but i want to read through everyone's entries and comment and, you know, be part of that whole online community and what not. does anyone else get like this? [it's been so long since i've been on the internet, i forgot how to code links]

i'll try to go through and read how everyone's been doing the next couple of days or what not...

jason's working on getting the BPB site blog working, so i think we're going to try to post more there instead of here. we'll see. i think we all need to get our bearings for what kind of projects we want to work on this year.

anyhow... behind the cut is the cover image to the papercutter.

website redesigned/updated [Aug. 29th, 2007|09:59 am]
for anyone that cares: i finally got around to redesigning/updating my website. it's pretty bare now, as far as decoration goes, but the portfolio is there and updated. plus i did it all in css, so when i do get around to spicing it up, it should be really, really easy.

anyhow, please check it out and let me know what you think. [also let me know if you catch any spelling errors typos, etc.]

later, dudes.

brownpaperbag wants your love... [Jul. 25th, 2007|02:33 pm]

by jonathan hill, jason rainey, tyler owings

brownpaper bag is going to be hanging in the basil hallward gallery at powell's books during the month of august. if you live in portland, come by and check it out. we'll have a lot of our original pages and illustrations hanging... come to see how much white out and digital fixing we do!

ga ga ga ga [Jul. 18th, 2007|11:11 am]

more comics under the cut, bitches! )

haven't posted here in a long, long time, but i've been busy. i have a regular cartooning gig with the asian reporter, and i've been doing illustration work here and there. i'm in the process of updating the website [which i haven't done since january] and maybe even redesigning it somewhere along the road if i get ambitious enough.

other points of news worth mentioning:

brownpaperbag is having a show at the basil howard gallery in portland, oregon the month of august. it starts first thursday. if you ever wanted to see the ridiculous amounts of white out/digital touch-ups we use in our art - be there, or be square.

my friend amber and i will be featured in the october/november issue of BUST magazine... okay, well the uterus panties that we print are going to be featured. i snuck a portfolio in when i sent them the panties... maybe i'll get some work?

cool, man.

[Mar. 3rd, 2007|11:26 am]

here's what i got done so far last night on the postcard. i'm not anywhere near done yet, but i thought i'd throw it out there. i know i've expressed this before, but i really do have a tought time with coloring. i was talking to mr. henry last night and we both wish that it was something we would give ourselves a little more time to practice with and experiment with, but we never really get around to it until something is due.

anyhow, i would really appreciate any feedback, even thought it's only about halfway done... one thing that i notices that i haven't changed yet is that i think the samurai in the back left corner - i thnk i need to make his mempo a little lighter to have it pop out a bit...

thanks!

a hero's death [Feb. 22nd, 2007|08:24 pm]

here's the inks. i am going to try to get the coloring done next week. i am going to have a busy weekend and i won't get around to coloring it until next tuesday or so. blah!

tet 2007 [Feb. 3rd, 2007|10:41 am]

here's the invite for this year's tet dinner that we have at our house. while i was working on this, the misses came over with a bottle of champagne to celebrate, and i had one glass [which, being the asian lightweight that i am got me pretty wobbly, as i like to call it]. i had never colored drunk before, and looking at it now, i think the text looks a little funny.

let me know what you think so i can fix it before i get it printed.

later, doods.

done and done! [Jan. 16th, 2007|07:44 pm]
so here's the latest of the comics for the viet nam literature project. the poet, linh dinh, suggested that i use this excerpt, as he felt it best described him and his work.

i was pretty happy with it. definetely put time and thought into this one, unlike the ly lan one...

and this of course means that now it's pretty much personal projects for me. like collaborations with meg and getting a postcard done to send out and starting up oneofthejohns!

yay!

anyone wanna help an asian brother out / art post [Jan. 12th, 2007|10:14 pm]
are you one of those white people that LOVE asian things? asian cartoons, asian women/men, asian toys, etc...

are good at color seperating?

do you want to help give to the asian american community by helping myself contribute to the amazing asian-american non-profit non-profit magazine hyphen?

[note: you don't have to be a white kid that loves asian things. you could be a mexican that loves asian things or a asian that loves asian things. the biggest factors are that you are a colorist and that you have time to blow in front of the computer this weekend...]

then offer to help me color this:

UPDATE: the totally fucking awesome meg hunt, [and hands down my favorite fucking artist to use color in the world], took the job on. i'll post the colored version as soon as i can. it really was a best possible scenario. thanks meg!

a note not related to trying to get someone to help me out: it's another3/4 crowd scene... seriously. this is becoming my niche. i think i might try to have a gallery show in the future of all the 3/4 view crowd scenes i've drawn over the last year.

whatever. i'll get it done. jonathan out.

one project down! two more to go! [Jan. 5th, 2007|04:55 pm]

so i have two more projects that i need to get done by the end of next week before i can start working on my own projects [the biggest of which is starting up on the comics pages again].

this one is a comission piece for a girl in saint louis for the cover for her demo cd. i was not interested at all and have blown it off for the last two months. after everything is said and done, it only took me a couple of hours and i am pretty happy with how it turned out. i should've just taken the six hours two months ago and gotten it overwith.

whatever.

back to work!

xmas, new year, all that jazz [Dec. 30th, 2006|10:06 pm]
[Current Location |work! ha ha!]
[music |mix tape that sarah made me for xmas]

first off. i don't know if she's tooted her own horn about this, and i am probably pretty slow with the upkeep, but the totally awesome meg hunt [info]exitwounds has an illustration in the january issue of BUST! it's a great magazine, even if you're not a lady [i used to steal allison's copies] and meg hunt makes it even more awesome!

go check it out!

second: my mum left on thursday morning. it was great having her around for the week and taking her to all the places i love around town [even if we didn't get to go to all the places i wanted to take her] BUT it was tough spending all day with her and then only having an hour or two to myself every day and as much as i love her to death, she's a real bitch when it comes to meeting girls that i'm dating. she gives them the cold shoulder and doesn't show any interest of talking to them or interacting with them at all.

take for instance the night that my ladyfriend had dinner with my family. me and the ladyfriend are sitting across the table from my mom and she asks me, 'does she eat pho?' she doesn't even acknowledge her existence... and then when my ladyfriend answers back, she just ignores the answer.

and that was the more pleasant of the passive aggressive comments that she made all week.

it really pisses me the hell off. even if the relationship i'm in isn't anything serious by any means, at least show some respect that i care for this person.

i swear. all week i felt like i was a story in the fucking joy luck club.

anyhow. mum's gone, xmas is over, and new year's is almost done. intense drawing will commence shortly.

chinese hopping vampires! [Dec. 20th, 2006|05:35 pm]

i guess it's redundant to say chinese hoppig vampires... i don't think anywhere else had hopping vampires.

anyhow...here's another quick nerdy fantasy type illustration i drew to warm up the old brain and drawing muscles... it feels good to be sitting at my office drawing again.

i know, i know... i will eventually have to get back to drawing one of the johns... but until then, i'm going to have a blast blowing your mind with the nerdiest shit i can muster!

it's been a long time, ain't it? [Dec. 19th, 2006|10:04 pm]
[music |hallelujah - jeff buckley]

nrrd out!

so this is the most i've drawn since the end of october when i burnt out and dropped off the face of the artistic world.

as lame as it is [and i feel like i *should* be drawing pictures for the birth of baby jesus] this is for my secret santa at work who is really into D & D, so i thought i'd have some fun and draw some nerdy shit.

things off the top of my head - the background sucks, which is why i greyed it, and the monster is very, very lame. i think one of the things i need to get back in the swing of things is honing my attention span again... sigh.

anyhow...

mr. henry and meg were doing this, and i thought i'd give it a shot. everyone thinks that no one cares, but the truth is, i like reading these about people that i care about. there's questions here that you might not feel comfortable asking them in person, but want to know the answer to.

end of year meme )

i'm hoping to draw more and post more again once december is over. fuck this, you know? i am not a big fan of xmas, but it's hard not to stress out when everyone else is stressing out. it's like jesus hijacks one month out of the year. fuck him.

finally made it to compound [Nov. 24th, 2006|04:50 pm]

i finally made it down to compound gallery today to look at the show that the totally awesome meg hunt was in... i might be biased, but meg's stuff was the best. i'm not really into really hip looking things painted on wood. it's been done to death a bit, hasn't it? anyhow... her paintings look great. the colors were so bright and awesome. i loved seeing them up close. i can't wait to work on some projects with her for APE! meg - you are awesome!

other news: there is none. tyler made an awesome thanksgiving dinner. i have been slowly picking up my drawing stuff again. i've been really bad about it, but i am over feeling guilty. i need some time.

oh yeah. one more thing: BUY A CALENDAR!
link5 comments|post comment

i didn't go to the gym today... [Nov. 15th, 2006|12:17 am]
... because i knew that i'd be going to a fucking rock show tonight.

first off, apologies to meg hunt. i know i told her that i would be going to see the starlight mints, but it turns out that frank black was playing tonight too... it was a last minute discovery for me [or i remembered rather]... and as much as i like what i have and have heard of the starlight mints, frank black is... well, how to put this?... my favorite fucking musician.

so mr. henry and i went to the wonder ballroom and shook and screamed our asses off. everything about the show was awesome. i honestly didn't know what to expect because his career is so spanning, but the set list was perfect.

blah blah blah. i won't get into details that will bore everyone, but i'll say that there is nothing that beats a good rock show...

goddamned. fuck. so awesome. i think i had one two hour long dorkasm the whole time.

good night and good luck.

behind the scenes at powell's [Nov. 6th, 2006|12:15 am]
[Current Location |crossroads of destiny]
[music |remake / remodel - roxy music]

feeling much better. think i have my grounding again. i really appreciate all who put in their two cents.

i thought i'd share this awesome find that someone at work showed me a couple of weeks ago. it's basically the weird ass book bin - books that are so weird that we don't want to sell them or throw them away. i just took a quick snapshot of some of the titles. they're pretty funny.

there's one that's sixth from the bottom that you can't read because of the flash. it's 'how to touch a leper'.

i love my job and the fact that there is this awesome treasure for everyone to discover and enjoy.

happy halloween [Oct. 31st, 2006|02:53 pm]
[music |inside of me - startlight mints]

[i didn't realize how emo this image is until i posted it. i am so lame!]

i joined a gym this morning. ha ha ha. i have to go for at least three months to get my money's worth. i think i can do it.

i want to take this week off before i jump into the pages again. i think i will spend the week doing thumbnails and sketches and what not to warm up.

later, doods.
